Re: Clarification on 32 bit vs 64 bit development

Hi Steve

Very nice post. Wish everyone would take the time to be as complete

To install "SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio" on your dev computer, you have to use the install exe. This integrates the CR designer into the .NET IDE, but more importantly in this case, at the end of the install you are asked if you want to install the 64 bit runtime.

You can then compile in 32 bit, 64 bit or "Any CPU" mode. VS automagically knows where to get the right runtime... E.g.; you should not need to worry about location of the assemblies, etc. It should just work.

Deploying a 64 bit app to a 64 bit OS will require the install of the 64 bit runtime on the deployed computers. In the following doc, we link to the 64 bit MSI and ClickOnce files. There is no 64 bit MSM file:

SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio: Updates & Runtime Downloads

One thing to note; if you run a 64 bit app, your database drivers will also have to be 64 bit. 64 nit ODBC must be configured (if using ODBC), etc., etc. This is a source of a large number of issues developers run into when going from 32 bit to 64 bit.
